Why pork sausages pack a powerful punch at the Old Spot
By Beverley Hawes
Bangers and dash for pub patrons
IT is not just the drinks that pack a punch at the Old Spot pub in Dursley.
For the sausages served up to hungry drinkers have become a tipplers' delight as well.
The chunky pork and herb sausages are made with a generous portion of the pub's Old Ric beer.
The bitter named after landlord Ric Sainty is specially brewed by the Gloucestershire brewery Uley Ales.
Ginger
Fred Holpin Butchers of Berkeley pours half a gallon of the beer into every 100 sausages it makes for the Old Spot pub.
Landlady Mrs Ellie Sainty said yesterday: "The beer gives the sausages a lovely ginger flavour and they certainly seem popular with our customers."
And sausage maker Martyn Parry said he had tried two or three recipes before getting the sausages just right.
"They have got a good spicy taste," he said.
