THE Old Spot in Dursley has won this year's CAMRA Pub of the Year award for the South-West, after winning the award for Gloucestershire earlier in the year.

The Old Spot began life as a farm cottage in 1776 and later became a school.

It became a pub about a century ago.

When in 1993 Ric and Ellie bought the Fox and Hounds (as it was then known) from a major brewer, it was in a fairly run-down state.

They changed its name and gradually - with much love and attention to detail - transformed it into the thriving public house it is today.

Not only is it smart and pleasantly intimate inside but it has an attractive garden where regulars play petanque in the summer.

Superbly-kept real ales comprise of two from Uley - Old Spot and, appropriately since it was named after the landlord, Old Ric - together with draught Bass and two guests, often supplied by Beer Seller in Thornbury.

Lunchtime snacks include Old Ric sausages (made with the beer, of course) and a platter of fine British cheeses.

The Old Spot is based on simple, traditional pub values.

As soon as you walk through the door, you know that you are in the right place - no piped music, no flashing lights from games machine, no pervasive smell of food or condiments on the tables, just the buzz of friendly conversation and two rows of welcoming hand pumps on the bar.

The pub is now entered for the CAMRA Pub of the Year award for England so why not go along for a visit and sample these delightful, real ales for yourself, then see what you think!
