Now that Gloucestershire has officially got the very best real ale pub in Britain, and arguably the world, a visit to the Old Spot really is essential. During the day it is very easy to get to Dursley using Stagecoach buses. A day trip to Dursley is possible from Cirencester, the Forest of Dean, Stroud and Tewkesbury. Ask the driver of the first Stagecoach bus that you get on for an Explorer ticket. Wherever you start from it will only cost you £5.20 - the price of just two pints of beer! The bus times are from Monday to Saturday unless stated otherwise.

From Gloucester
The most convenient departure for Dursley is the 1045 Stagecoach 12 service bus, which travels through Quedgeley and Cam. The bus leaves from the bus stop in Eastgate Street just beyond JD Wetherspoon's Water Poet pub. This bus arrives at Dursley May Lane bus station at 1133. The Old Spot Inn is in front of the bus station- you can't miss it! However, the pub does not usually open until midday but you can either spend time browsing in the adjacent brand new public library or visiting the shops nearby.

After spending over two and a half hours at the Old Spot you will probably be ready to catch the 1443 bus back to Gloucester. This 12 service bus gets back to Gloucester Eastgate Street at 1537. On Monday to Friday this is the last 12 service back to Gloucester, although Stagecoach 91 service buses leave from May Lane at 1635,1735,1805 and 1905. On Saturdays the 12 service replaces the 91 service and leaves the Old Spot at 1543,1643,1743 and 1843.

From Tewkesbury
There are two Stagecoach bus routes from Tewkesbury to Gloucester, the 41 (via Cheltenham) or the direct 71 service. The 71 service leaves at 0923 (Mon-Sat) and travels directly to Gloucester along the A38 but when you get to the city bus station you will have three quarters of an hour to wait before the Dursley bus departs. If you catch the 0900 (Mon-Fri) 41 service bus from Boots in the High Street, will get to Clarence Street in Cheltenham at 0925. (Saturday service departs Tewkesbury at 0913 and arrives in Clarence Street at 0940). Then walk to the Promenade and catch the next available 94 Service to Gloucester. (regular departures every ten minutes). The 94 bus should get to Gloucester in 35 minutes. It stops opposite the bus station in Market Parade. Walk along Clarence Street to catch the Dursley bus in Eastgate Street at quarter to eleven. After suitable refreshment leave the Old Spot in time to catch the 1443 bus back to Gloucester. The 12 service bus gets back to Gloucester Eastgate Street at 1537. A 71 service bus conveniently departs from the bus station at 1545. However, you could catch a 94 bus back to Cheltenham leaving you time for a pint in Gloucester. When you get to Cheltenham there are 41 service buses back to Tewkesbury from Clarence Street in Cheltenham at 1645 & 1700 (Mon-Fri) and 1650 & 1710 (Sat).

From the Forest of Dean
The 30 service from Coleford (Mon-Sat) leaves at 0930 and calls at Cinderford at 0956. The bus arrives in Gloucester bus station at 1030, leaving a quarter of an hour to walk down Clarence Street to catch the 12 service to Dursley at 1045.

The 12 bus departs from the Old Spot at 1443 and arrives in Gloucester at 1537. You might have chance for a pint in the Water Poet in Eastgate Street before catching the 1610 (MonSat) 30 service back to Cinderford (1643) and Coleford (arrive 1707).

It is obvious that the £5.20 Stagecoach Explorer ticket offers best value for money when travelling from Cirencester, the Forest or Tewkesbury.

The 73 service (Mon-Sat) from Lydney departs at 0934 and gets to Gloucester bus station at 1015. You will have half an hour before the 12 service to Dursley leaves from Eastgate Street (1045). The 12 bus departs from the Old Spot at 1443 and arrives in Gloucester at 1537. You will have an hour to spare before the 73 bus to Lydney leaves the bus station at 1640 (arrives Lydney at 1720).

From Cirencester
The Stagecoach 51 (Mon-Sat) service bus leaves the Corn Hall in Cirencester at 0920 and it gets to the Royal Well bus station in Cheltenham at 1000. You will need to walk briskly around the corner to the Promenade to catch the 1010 94 service to Gloucester. A less stressful option is to wait until the 46 (Mon-Sat) service to Stroud and Forest Green leaves the Promenade at 1025. It will probably be a double-decker bus and, if you sit upstairs, you will have great views of the Painswick valley on the route. (see Stroud for the onward connection to Dursley).

You can then either catch the 12 service back to Gloucester at 1443 or go on the earlier 20 service back to Stroud at 1420 (Mon-Fri) which arrives at Merrywalks at 1505. (See below for Saturday). The 46 bus service to Cheltenham departs from Merrywalks at 1547* (Note: On Saturdays and during school holidays this bus departs at 1540) and arrives in Cheltenham in time to catch the 1710 bus to Cirencester). No matter what bus you choose you should have time for a glass of beer in the Good Beer Guide & listed Queen Victoria in Gloucester Street, which is not too far away. (*You may like to stay at the 'Queen Vic' or amble through the streets of Stroud until the next bus leaves for Cheltenham at 1640 as the 1547 (Mon-Fri) is a school bus). Back in Cheltenham you will have half an hour to wait for the 1810 (Mon-Sat) 51 Stagecoach bus back to Cirencester.

From Stroud
There is an alternative way to get to Dursley using Stagecoach buses. From Stroud Merrywalks the 20 service departs at 1130 (Mon-Fri) 1120 (Sat) and arrives at the Old Spot at 1210 (Mon-Fri) 1200 (Sat). You will have over two hours in the CAMRA National Pub of the Year before the 20 service back to Stroud departs at 1420 (Mon-Fri) and arrives at Merrywalks at 1505. On Saturday the 20 Service leaves from the Old Spot at 1410 (arrive Stroud 1455) and 1510 (arrive Stroud 1555).
