Getting Plastered at the Spot
At present I feel like I'm sat in the middle of a murder scene, plastic sheeting everywhere - all that's missing is the dead man trace on the floor! What, you might ask, is going on? ...... damp treatment - last done 20 years ago, and guess what it came with - a 20 year guarantee! Unfortunately, we can't paint over for at least 6 weeks so I apologise if the pub looks a little unloved!

Gloucestershire Camra Pub of the Year
Big thanks to Andrew Frape, Gloucestershire CAMRA chairman, for presenting us with our Gloucestershire Camra Pub of the Year 2103 Award. We are very proud to have won this once again. Cheers!

Cotswold Life Best Neighbourhood Pub
We have been given some more good news, we are a finalist at the Cotswold Life awards night for Best Neighbourhood Pub. The Three finalists attend the award ceremony at Cheltenham Racecourse on the 1st July - just cross your fingers!

Gourmet Night
I've been getting a lot of enquiries about the next Gourmet Night after the success of the St George's fine fodder and beer flight night! For those people that are constantly missing out, the date will be the 8th August but I have absolutely no idea on the theme or menu - that will follow shortly.

Charity Quiz
A BIG thanks to Viv Jones for the Charity Quiz on Sunday 26th May. All money went to Viv's charity - Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Gin Tasting
After last year's amazing success, we will be holding another Gin Tasting night in the garden, tasting over 6 different gins, and all washed down with a selection of tapas.

We have the 19th June as a tentative date and it will be £10 per person.

Old Spot Summer Beer Festival
The Old Spot Summer Beer Festival will be taking place on the 9th-11th August, with live music on the Sunday night. We will be going with a regional theme this year. Watch this space for more details!

Spotfest - with Thrill Collins
Another revival this year will be Spotfest. As with most music, it's bound to rain, so bring your wellies and a sense of humour! The line up has been confirmed and is as follows:

--- The Whole Grand Scheme ---,

--- the Macaroni Penguins ---,

and closing on the pyramid stage, --- Thrill Collins ---.

The date is Sunday the 14th July, from 5pm.

7 Pubs in 7 Days
We are really looking forward to our brewer/ musician and 'world renowned man of mystery' tour in June with his gig at the Old Spot taking place on June 2nd from 4pm. For those of you who are still not with me, I'm talking about Kenny Boy Lush! All are welcome for a little toe tapping magic.

Ken Returns for the 'Seven Pubs in Seven Days' Challenge
Ken Lush, Head Brewer at Uley Brewery is set to repeat his 7 Pubs in 7 Days tour, raising money for the RNLI. Ken first undertook the tour 2 years ago, again for the RNLI and decided it was time to repeat the event.

Ken says, "The RNLI saved my life when I was 5 so it's a good opportunity to say thank you."

Ken plays self penned songs on acoustic guitar, mandola and mandocello interspersed with comedy songs, folk, country and blues, all served up with lashings of quirky humour!

"Folk tell me I do a half tidy version of Romeo and Juliette" says Ken, "but it's got nothing on the song I do about potatoes!"

Wildlife Drop In
Find out about wildlife without leaving the Spot! Whether your interest is orchids or otters, discover what Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust does locally and how you can help. Ask me about the best places to see wildlife, or how to encourage it into your garden. Drop Ins are every 4 weeks - the next is Thurs 20th June 2-4pm. You can usually 'spot' me in the main bar - come for a chat or just help yourself to leaflets.

Rev Janet hangs up her Cassock
Dursley is losing one of its major assets this summer when the reverend Janet Bromley retires this year. Janet has been holding communion at St James church for over 13 years, she was the major driving force behind raising money for the much need repairs, estimated at almost £500,000.

Part of that fund raising, she did at the Spot and is no stranger to pulling pints, and serving hot supper from the kitchen. So this year she will be making one final pilgrimage behind the bar to serve the now famous 'Reverend Janet', her much loved beer created in her honour. Made by Uley brewery, its absolute summer stunner, and all proceeds from the sale of the beer will be donated to St James church.

And on a personal note, you will be missed by me especially.

Rev. Janet Bromley - A Brief Bio
This July we will bid a fond farewell to Rev. Janet Bromley who is retiring after thirteen years as Rector of the Parish of St. James the Great, Dursley. Arriving in the summer of 2000, she had previously been Assistant Curate in Westbury-on-Trym, and then Wroughton, near Swindon.

Previously Janet worked in the hotel and catering industry and hospitals in the field of Human Resources and then taught Management and Personnel Management to catering students at Brunel College in Bristol. She then became Administrator of the Bristol Abbeyfield Society - an organisation which provides support and care for the elderly. Janet did her theological training of 3 years, non-residentially at Salisbury, before being ordained as Deacon on 3 July 1994 and then as Priest on 4 December 1996.

In 2005 an appeal was launched to raise funds for major work to be done on the church building. Janet led this with great enthusiasm and skill, making fund raising fun and enabling us to work together to raise the £500,000 needed for a new roof and modifications to the inside of the church.

Janet has always loved cooking and entertaining and prepared sumptuous feasts at a series of wine tasting evenings at the Rectory in aid of the Appeal. Often to be seen at The Old Spot, Janet enjoys beer almost as much as wine and she took her turn behind the pumps on three occasions, again to help raise money for the Appeal.

Janet was surprised and delighted recently to be given this year's Leslie D Gale award for helping the community. Many people will miss her when she retires to Monmouth in the summer. There will be a hog roast on the church lawn at midday on Saturday 20 July for the local community to say goodbye to Janet, and her last celebration of the Eucharist as Rector will be at 10 am on Sunday 28 July. Her hard work over the last thirteen years has ensured that St. James is indeed "At the Heart of the Community" and will continue to be.

The Old Spot Inn win Best Cask Ale Pub of 2011 at the Great British Pub Awards

The "Spot", described appropriately by the landlord Steve Herbert as "A Pub of a Thousand Locals", is set in the beautiful Cotswolds, actually on the Cotswold Way as it passes through the town of Dursley and is a popular watering hole for walkers. The Old Spot is friendly, deeply traditional and one of the must-visits of the county. This 100 year old free house, named after the Gloucestershire Old Spot pig, has been sympathetically restored by its owner, Ric Sainty.

Come inside the site and enjoy some of the flavour that makes this traditional little boozer what it is. The intimate atmosphere is enhanced by log fires and adorned with plenty of brewery memorabilia.

Better still, why not pay us a visit, you'll be greeted with courtesy and efficiency and it probably wont take you long to fit in amongst the locals as if you'd always been there.

As well as Uley's Old Ric, named after the owner, we nomally have at least 8 guest Real Ales on at any given time, mainly from micro breweries, served in five separate drinking areas. We also have a good selection of fine Wines as well as our famous Whisky collection. If you're feeling hungry, try one of our home cooked meals or a light snack from our food menu and relax in the charm that graces this pub. The wholesome menu is available between 12pm and 3pm seven days a week.

The secluded garden offers a good sized covered and heated area and a separate patio area for those of you who'd like to take a breath air outside.

On the Cotswold way, this convivial local is the "CAMRA's National Pub of the Year 2007" and multi award-winner conveniently stands opposite a free car park.
