Old Spot Newsletter

Welcome to our Easter Newsletter

Welcome to our Easter edition of the Old Spot Newsletter. Hopefully we can shed a little sunshine on what can be only be described as trying times.

Renishaws
Our hearts go out to the guys who are facing an uncertain future at Renishaws. By the time you read this, some of you will know your fate, but all we can do is wish you all the best for the future. It might be of some comfort to know that at least you have many friends here and some chats can be very rewarding.

Old Spot Price Freeze
All of us that work at the Old Spot are fully aware that this is clearly becoming one of the worst recessions of our life time. There is not a lot we can do about the global economy but there is something we can do about ours. We have decided (with the help of some of our suppliers) to freeze all our drink prices until next year irrespective of what happens in the budget. It may not seem a lot, but at least on top of everything else, you wont be forking out any extra on your favourite tipple.

Needless to say our 'beloved' Alistair Darling will be doing his darndest to make things more difficult with ridiculous beer duty increases and the constant attack by those idiotic politicians who are trying to justify their exorbitant wages by changing their attack from smoking in pubs to alcohol. Sometimes I feel they won't be happy until they have seen the last public house close its door for the last time and so ending what I consider to be Britain's greatest heritage (sorry ma'am).

Celebrity Chef Night
On a lighter note, big thanks to Guy for his stint as celebrity guest chef. The food was excellent and probably the best Indian curry we have had outside India. Trouble is, beer sales went down because we were all so bloated! Well done Guy, tremendous!

The next one is on Thur 30th April at 7.30 pm and will be a Romanian Evening with a real Romanian Guest Chef. The price is £7.50 per head which is incredibly good value, so get your booking in early!

Don't be scared now guys (and gals) - the next slot is still open so don your aprons, sharpen your knives and dig out your Delias - we need you!

And a good time was had by all . . . !

Church Roof Fund
There will a change of clergy behind the bar this year with the Reverend Janet handing over our charity weekend to the Reverend Skye. Apparently Skye is a bit of a dab hand at the altar and bar alike. Watch this space.

This year, the Frocester T-shirts will be designed and sponsored by Bath Ales. In previous years, we have had special brews from Uley Brewery called 'The Reverend Janet' and 'Severn Bells' by Severn Vale. This year Bath Ales will be concocting a special beer called 'Heavenly Hare'. I can't wait to sample it!

Nottingham Nigel
Sadly, ‘Nottingham' Nigel finally lost his short battle with cancer at 1.30 am, Sat 4th April. He was a man of tremendous generosity and was always there for you when your chips were down. Ever willing to give up his time; transport you from A to B; administer First Aid to injured brewers (!) or just to be your friend, Nigel was someone whose spirit, sense of humour and good company made him always fun to be with. He will be sorely missed by all. Our thoughts are with Sue and his family at this very sad time.

Meet the Brewer with St. Austell
A big thank you to St. Austell Brewery for hosting the 'Meet the Brewer' night. How many free bottles of beer did they give out? It was noticed that some of you just couldn't stop asking questions! And quite possibly the best Cornish pasties ever - cheers Adrian, Julie and Mervyn.

A Musical Evening with Tish Café
Also big thanks to Jaff and Dave from Tish Café. The music was really great and a fantastic evening was had by all. Brilliant to see the Welsh contingent too - you certainly know how to have a good time - hope to see you again soon!

Easter Eaters
Unfortunately the Festival of Fish Day is sold out, but we still have vacancies for Easter Sunday. Click here or ask at the bar for the menu.

The Easter Beerfest at the Old Spot is the 'Staff Favourites'. All beers have been chosen by the happy team you all know and love. It was originally due to be during the week of St. George's Day, but was brought forward to coincide with CAMRA's National Cask Ale week. For more information, please see:- www.camra.org.uk or www.caskaleweek.co.uk.

Bangers & Mash for St. George's Day
New addition to your social calendar - to celebrate St. Georges Day (April 23), we will be having a "bangers and mash" night, with music from Leon Daye. Names behind the bar, please.
