Old Spot Newsletter

Welcome to the June Newsletter

Welcome to the June edition of the Old Spot Newsletter ...

I hope you're all enjoying the latest 'heat-wave'. We certainly are here at the Spot! Long may it continue!

You may like to check out 'Designs on Dursley' which is a new and exciting campaign created by some of the local residents and businesses who feel that Dursley is a place to be proud of. Using the accumulative creative skills, talents and resources, 'Designs on Dursley' wants to bring out the best that Dursley & District has to offer. For more info, go to www.designs-on-dursley.co.uk.

Skirmish! (Paintballing)
I reckon there are approximately 40 people hobbling around the Dursley district looking for new knees after the recent paintballing trip in Portishead. Again it proved that youth is no match for experience and knowledge, with the Old Gits trouncing the Young Pups 900 points to 300! A great time was had by all, with war stories and tales of bravery and heroism being told well into the night back at the pub. Awards were handed out to those that really shone:

  • Best Shot - Tom Sainty for his Adrian Jenkins crotch shot!
  • Most Shots - Robbie Parkinson for actually looking like he had measles!
  • Best Bruise - Myself, Steve Herbert (I didn't cry or anything!)
  • The Old Spot Hero - This goes to AJ for marching down the battlefield Terminator-style!
  • The Andy Unwin Award - an award 'for those that go that extra yard' goes to Zak Sanders for repeatedly cartwheeling during the shoot-out. This was either a bad ploy for avoiding paintballs, or a really excellent way of reducing the opposition to hysterics and rendering themselves defenseless - we can only ponder!

Blessed! Wife's Surprise
The Old Spot had its first (unofficial) blessing on Saturday 23rd May. It was held by our very own Reverend Skye with special permission being given by the Dean of Gloucester. Apparently, this was a first for Gloucestershire and was arranged by Mike Hayward as a surprise for his wife, Dell for her 40th birthday ...... ahhhh!

Celebrity Chef Night
Steve Ruben took up the mantle for Celebrity Chef last month with a Polish feast. We were treated to 3 classic courses with over 44 locals joining us for the evening's dining. Big thanks to Steve's mum and Jude for being on hand and for offering a little morale support.

The next one is Kim Adams' Greek Night on Monday 22nd June at 7.30pm. Once again, it is a ticketed event with the price at £7.50. I could tell you more, but it's fully booked already! "Yiamas, Kimi!"

Butcombe Trip
Big thanks to Steve and Martin at Butcombe Brewery for entertaining the troops last Tuesday when we visited the brewery. There was beer, more beer, and a little more beer! It was then on to the Lamb at Axbridge for a spot of mighty fine sausage and mash and a touch more? (guess)!

Cricket
In this year of the Ashes (remember the last one in England, in 2005 which hung in the balance until the final afternoon of the final test!), well our own in-house match in Ric's memory is shaping up well. The sides have now been picked with the Young Pups once again taking on the Old Gits (perhaps they might do a little better this time!). It is taking place at Cam Bulldogs at 3.30pm, Sunday 14th June, with a BBQ and music with Tish Café back at the pub afterwards. Even if you're not playing, please feel free to join us and show your support.

In July, we will be challenging the Old Crown in Uley, and we will be naming the "Ric Sainty - Sandra Morgan shield" in memory of the two legendary publicans we unfortunately lost last year from the two pubs.

Bellringers Wanted!
Dursley Bell Ringers. Saturday July 25th, at 12.00 noon and at 4.00 pm. When you hear the bells of St James' church ringing have you ever wondered ...

  • Why are they ringing?
  • How are they rung?
  • Who is ringing them?
  • How long have those bells been there?
  • What are bells made from?
  • How many bells are there?
  • Did you know that the bells of St James' are considered to be among the finest sounding bells in the county?
  • Did you know that the Dursley bell ringers are another of the town's successful groups?
  • Did you know that the Old Spot is the ringers' regular watering hole on Thursday evenings?
  • Would you like to find out the answers to these and many more questions?

On Saturday 25th July we invite you to come along, bring a friend or two with you, and listen to a brief explanation of English ringing, see the ringers in action, climb the tower to see and hear the bells being rung and, for the brave, an opportunity to have an introductory lesson. Then after all that effort what better than to join us in the Old Spot for a little refreshment!

We are proposing to run two sessions: at 12.00 noon and 4.00 pm. If you are interested in joining us please speak to Steve and put your name on the list behind the bar.

The Old Spot Pig(let) - Pig Diary
Our pig is coming along well and growing fast. We have decided not to give it a name as naming one's food is apparently not the done thing! We will be popping down to be personally introduced in July, and will gladly pass on any good will messages you may have.
