 Old Ric. 12.07.08
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the passing of Ric Sainty on Wednesday, 16th July, 2008 at 10:15am local time,
while holidaying in France with his best friend of over 30 years, Chas Wright. He died of a heart attack, doing one of the things
he loved most - and was good at - having a good time!
Old Ric, one of the best loved and most respected of pub landlords, could charm anyone with his good nature, humour and tremendous presence.
Ric was somebody whose company you always enjoyed.
Known, loved and respected the trade over, he's headed to the great alehouse in the sky.
A true friend and a true gentleman, he touched so many hearts.
Our thoughts are with his family and many friends at this sad time.
If you'd like to add your thoughts, memories or condolences, please do so using the special thread on the forum.
Feel free to upload any photos you may have to accompany your stories (keep them small!)

More details will be posted on the website as they become known. If you would like to know more about Ric, please click here.

And the Old Spot Lives On . . .
Welcome to July's Newsletter
Look at this . . . July's newsletter actually in July, amazing, next thing you know, we might even have a summer! Got to say a big thankyou to Roger Grimes - the hanging baskets look superb, getting loads of great feed back about them. For those lucky soles who were at Glastonbury festival, "Praise be!" - finally a festival that didn't involve frantically looking for a life jacket in the middle of the night.
The Reverend Janet Bromley back behind the bar
Don't be shocked to find the local vicar, Reverend Janet Bromley pulling pints behind the bar and taking the occasional confession. However please remember the bar is a long way from the confessional and a lot busier, but as the great Crocodile Dundee said: "a problem shared is a problem halved". From the 1st August Reverend Janet (the beer that is) will be on the bar. On the first weekend of August, we will be dedicating all the sale of Rev "J" to the church, so get your drinking heads on for charity, but don't worry, those that get a taste for it will find it on the bar for the next 6-7 weeks.
'Steve's Favourites' Summer Beer Festival
Those of you coming for a beer next weekend (Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August 2008), details are at the bar and online here.
Frocester Beer Festival
Talking of festivals, Frocester Beer Festival tickets are only available via the Lions Club or you can get them on line at: www.dursleylions.org. Pubs are not selling them this year, repeat pubs are not selling them this year.
Don't forget to keep the Sunday free for the "CHILL OUT". It's one of the best days of the year at the pub. T-shirts for the Frocester Beer Festival are now on sale at the pub and on our website, remember all profits are going to St James Church roof appeal, but don't worry if you don't manage to get your hands on one before you go they will be on sale at the Uley Brewery bar (Thanks Chas).
Boat Trip Sunday 14th September - Tickets: £25 from the Bar
Tickets for the Tewkesbury Boat Trip are now on sale behind the bar so don't miss out, its £25 all in. Your hard earned cash gets you:
Meet at the pub: 12pm
Arrive in Tewkesbury at 1pm . . . you get an hour to explore Tewkesbury's rich architectural history, including the Abbey and its 19th century flour mill, or you could just go to the bloody pub like you do every year till I chase you out and send you to the boat - why do I bother?!
We get on the boat at 2pm and travel up the Severn and Avon, stopping at various hostelries - yes, more pubs! We will be taking Leon Daye along with us for a little musical entertainment and then we will have tea at about 4pm, which consists of a ploughman type meal and more beer!
Back into Tewkesbury then straight home! Previously we have stopped in Tewkesbury for a "swift half" but this has proved hazardous as I lose the ability to count after a few shandies and well, we could possibly (legally I am not admitting anything) leave people behind! So its back to the Spot for a little fodder and one last night cap before sending you home to your warm beds, so you can wake up the next day unbright and very unbreezy to call in sick for work!
Fancy dress this year is a toss up between 'Heroes & Villains' or 'Psychedelic Sixties Summer of Love' (more like frigging rain! this was the one cancelled last year due to floods). Let me know your thoughts . . . or actually maybe not - I know you guys too well and frankly I want to stay as far away from thoughts as possible!
The Annual Kayak Trip,
I say kayak trip, but its really just a convenient way of getting between the pubs! Our now nationally famous award winning brewer Steve MacDonald proved a little less competent on the water than he does in his brewery , providing us with a hat-trick of swan dives into the river. Big thanks to Tipper for being an absolute demon over the BBQ, the only down side was the thieving cows that stole my gazebo and I mean cows . . . long story!
10 Things we found about each other:-
- Carl can sing . . . really sing!
- Tipper can cook;
- Joel loves snuggling up to Rob Parkinson, it feels right & helps him sleep;
- Cows steal gazebos;
- Steve Mac will never be an Olympic kayaker;
- Jack likes rolling in cowpats at every opportunity;
- Those that snore will be given a separate camping field in future;
- James Pegler hasn't got RAC membership.;
- Water fights are ace;
- When water levels rise, you go faster.
See you next year!!!
Grand Sponsored Fun Walk for Charity
On the 3rd August, the Sponsored Walk leaves the Old Spot to raise money for:-
- St James Church;
- Cheltenham Cobalt Unit;
- Macmillan Nurses.
There are 3 walks available, ranging from 3.25 to 6 miles. Sponsorship forms are available from the bar or from the Vale Vision Community Shop. Please attend if you can and please give generously to these three worthwhile causes.
Staff - New and Returning
Big welcome back to Emma, it's been too long sweetie. We have a new student on board, Lorna. We'll give her a little longer to settle in so look out for the low down on her next month.
